Survey: A Wedding In Philadelphia Now Costs An Average Of About $45K

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – First comes love, then comes marriage…then comes the potential for a whole lot of debt.

Wedding planning website The Knot has released the results of its 2014 roundup on wedding spending, and the results are a little scary.

The average U.S. wedding now costs a whopping $31,213 – and that's before the honeymoon.

Unsurprisingly, Manhattan is the most expensive place to get married, with the average wedding costing more than $75,000. Utah was the least expensive place to get hitched at just over $15,000 per wedding.

In Philadelphia, the seventh most expensive place to wed, the average celebration costs $44,090, while a South Jersey wedding costs about $40,000.

And despite the rising costs associated with tying the knot, the guest list count is dropping. In 2014, the average wedding had 136 guests, down from 149 in 2009.

Another rapidly growing trend? Wedding planning and research via smartphone. According to The Knot's Editor in Chief, Rebecca Dolgin, 66% of brides have looked up vendors or scoured wedding gowns using their phone as compared to just 33% in 2011.
