Event At West Chester University Aims At Sparking Girls' Love Of Science

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- West Chester University is holding a special event for girls this weekend called Super Science Saturday. It's a chance for girls to perform experiments in a variety of disciplines, and meet women who work in the sciences.

Astronomer and West Chester Associate Professor Karen Schwarz says 100 girls in grades 6 through 12 will take part.

"Girls at this age, middle school and up, tend to start losing interest in science," he said, "and also studies show that they lose their confidence in their ability to do science and math."

The day's packed with activities --- learning about careers in science, technology, engineering and math, and performing hands on experiments guided by women scientists.

"Oh, my gosh, they get so excited," Schwarz said. "They laugh, they shout, they have a great time. And they're taking selfies in their science outfits, doing their experiments. "

Making discoveries about the sciences, and themselves.
