'Suicide Squad' Success At Box Office
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It was anything but box-office suicide for 'Suicide Squad.'
The highly anticipated, comic book-inspired action thriller, starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie, earned an estimated, whopping $135-million on its weekend debut for a runaway first-place finish that represents the biggest August opening of all time.
In the runner-up spot was last weekend's leader, another action thriller, the sequel, 'Jason Bourne,' starring Matt Damon. It took in another $27-million.
Rounding out the top five were three holdovers -- 'Bad Moms' with $14-million, 'The Secret Life of Pets' with $12-million, and 'Star Trek Beyond' with $10-million.
And sixth was the weekend's other new mainstream release – the comedy-fantasy, 'Nine Lives,' with Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Garner – earning under $7-million.
With 'Suicide Squad' headed for the record books, industry-wide totals were well ahead of those of last weekend and those of a year ago.
