Suburban GOP State Senator To Announce AG Run

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- More than sixteen months before the election, embattled Attorney General Kathleen Kane is getting a challenger.

Suburban Philadelphia Republican state Senator John Rafferty is scheduled to announce his candidacy for attorney general this week.

"This is certainly an early indication that the attorney general, Kathleen Kane, is in a world of political difficulty, as well as legal difficulty," says Franklin and Marshall College political analyst Terry Madonna. "This is very, very early for candidates to the row offices to announce their candidacy."

Republican Rafferty ran for attorney general in 2012, but bowed out when then-Governor Tom Corbett supported David Freed, who lost to Democrat Kane.

Madonna believes the pressure will build on other candidates to announce. He expects a crowded field in the race for Pennsylvania attorney general.
