Veteran Substitute Teachers Are Unhappy With Pay Offered By New Firm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Veteran substitute teachers are frustrated over the pay being offered by a company now managing subs for Philadelphia schools.
John Renfro calls the $90-a-day being offered to Philadelphia substitutes next year "a joke." He says last school year, he made more than twice that under the PFT contract.
"They paid us more than $200 because we have more, masters plus 30 [credits] myself and you need to pay for that experience."
Veteran teacher Vince Trombetto says Source4Teachers, the firm now managing subs, won't get experienced teachers at that pay rate.
"The people they're going to hire, and I'm not demeaning them, but the people that are going to go in there, they're just not ready to educate the kids."
District spokesman Fernando Gallard says Source4Teachers is paying market rates in suburban districts.
"At those school districts, they are getting highly qualified, very qualified teachers."
The teachers union, though, has filed an unfair labor practice complaint.
