Study: The Dirtiest Thing You Touch Each Day Is Probably Not The Toilet Seat

By Lynne Adkins

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Germs are everywhere, but nine everyday things you touch may be dirtier than your toilet seat according to a new study.

Your handbag, smartphone, cutting board, carpet and pet food bowl are just a few items that may be germier than the commode.

Dr. Melissa Marko, Assistant Professor of Biology at the University of the Sciences, isn't surprised at the list.

"These are things we use every day that get the most use, that everyone is touching particularly before we wash our hands, constantly going from one thing to the next."

She says there are microbes everywhere and there's no escaping the germs, and most won't hurt you, so use common sense and soap and water.
