Study: New Research Links Drinking Coffee To Preventing Cancer Recurrence

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- According to a new research study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, drinking coffee could have a positive impact on reducing the chances of a recurrence of of colon cancer or death from the disease.

While the results point to coffee having a positive impact, researchers are reminding people that it is still too early to recommend drinking coffee to prevent the disease from coming back. More testing is needed to prove causation.

People with stage III colon cancer who consumed at least four cups of caffeinated coffee each day had odds 52 percent lower of the disease recurring or resulting in death when compared to people that did not drink coffee.

Those who consumed less coffee than that on a daily basis appeared to see some of the results to a lesser degree.

Researchers explained that if you already consume coffee regularly, you can continue to do so as the study shows that there is no negative impact in regards to the cancer. However, if you do not already drink coffee regularly, it may be too early to suggest that you should as a response to the cancer.
