Study: Cutting Fat Can Lead To Greater Weight Loss Than Cutting Carbs

BETHESDA, Md. (CBS) – A new study suggests cutting fat may be better than cutting carbs.

The study, done by the National Institutes of Health, shows cutting fat can lead to greater weight loss compared to carbohydrates.

Researchers examined 19 obese adults and noted participants lost more body fat when restricting fats.

"Interestingly, study participants lost even more body fat during the fat-restricted diet, as it resulted in a greater imbalance between the fat eaten and fat burned. These findings counter the theory that body fat loss necessarily requires decreasing insulin, thereby increasing the release of stored fat from fat tissue and increasing the amount of fat burned by the body," said Kevin Hall, Ph.D., NIDDK senior investigator and lead study author.

Researchers found a low carb diet still reduces insulin and increases fat burning.

According to the study, more than two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese.
