Study: A College Staple Could Apparently Kill You

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – They're cheap, they're delicious and they could kill you.

A new study links instant noodles, like ramen, with cardiometabolic syndrome, which raises a person's risk for developing things like heart disease and diabetes.

Dr. Hyun Joon Shin, a clinical cardiology fellow at Baylor University Medical Center and a nutrition epidemiology doctoral student at Harvard School of Public Health, focused his research on South Korea, which has the highest per capita consumption of instant noodles in the world.

Dr. Shin consulted the results of a national survey conducted in South Korea that contained data on more than 10,000 adults. More than half of those polled were women.

What he found is that eating the instant noodles two or more times per week was associated with a rising risk of cardiometabolic syndrome, particularly in women.

"This research is significant since many people are consuming instant noodles without knowing possible health risks," Dr. Shin said on the Baylor website. "My hope is that this study can lay a foundation for future research about the health effects of instant noodle consumption."

The research is published in The Journal of Nutrition.
