State Representative Holds Housing Expo To Help Seniors

By Mike Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- State Rep Leslie Acosta hosted a housing expo today in North Philadelphia for seniors to learn what services and housing options are available to them.

About a dozen city agencies as well as developers offered senior housing set up tables in the gym at Zion Baptist Church on North Broad street.

State Rep Leslie Acosta says the expo was organized by one of her interns, and the goal is to help as many seniors as possible.

"There is housing available. They just don't know how to tap into that. And when they do, either they're denied because they don't know how put the application process together correctly or just simply because they don't know how to navigate the system," Acosta said.

Acosta says the one-on-one and group counseling sessions here help people cut through the red tape.

"How to apply for housing, where to go to apply for housing, what does PHA provide, what does PHFA provide."

Health care experts also met with seniors to answer their medicare and medicaid questions.
