State Auditor General Examines Philadelphia School District

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The operations of the Philadelphia School District are under the microscope of the state Auditor General.

Auditor General Euguene DePasquale has begun an audit of the school district, with a special focus on recommendations from an audit three years ago:

"The biggest areas of concern there," he says, "were A...financial stability in the previous audit, and B...was school safety."

DePasquale says he'll also try to quantify what he called the "undue financial strain" of state cuts in charter school tuition reimbursements to the district:

"That $100 million lack of reimbursement is bigger than most school districts' budgets."

Superintendent William Hite welcomed the move.

DePasquale said while the audit wouldn't be complete for a year or so, his office would provide interim reports along the way.
