South Philly's Snyder Plaza Getting Mural Arts Makeover

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- October is expected to be a big month for mural arts Philadelphia -- but some new murals are already popping up in South Philadelphia.

Mural Arts is partnering with The Goldenberg Group to renovate Snyder Plaza. Jane Golden with Mural Arts Philadelphia says once transformed, this shopping center will be called The Murals At Swanson Walk.

"There's just huge potential down here to make this an area that is alive with art," Golden said.

Ellen Lissy Rosenberg with The Goldenberg Group describes the upcoming renovations:

"We will get new street, landscaping, hardscaping, you'll have greenery, new lights, much better places to sit, you'll have lots of shade and areas for walking around," she said. "We'll be adding trees, there will be greening of this area, the street won't look the way it looks right now and we intend to have murals covering most, if not all of the walls right around here."

The announcement comes just as they prepare to kick-off Mural Arts Month, which is in October.

"What we do, is we structure a month filled with wonderful events, lots of dedications, exhibitions, panel discussions, lectures," Golden explained. "It is a time of the year that we get to celebrate that we have the largest collection of public art in the world."

You can see some of the murals already in place here at Snyder Plaza during a free kick-off party on September 30.
