South Philly Celebrates Italian Market Festival

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- South Philadelphia will be buzzing this weekend for the annual Italian Market Festival.

The event draws thousands from throughout the region every year.

Streets around 9th and Washington are blocked off as merchants set up tables to serve great food and cold drinks.

Event producer Michelle Gambino says this year is even more special as the district celebrates 100 years.

"It's awesome it's a great sense of community." said Michelle Gambino. "And that's what you will like about the festival is the sense of community that it brings. People who moved come back. A lot of the neighbors of the streets have street parties. They block off the streets and invite their friends."

David and Chrissy from Reading attend every year, and like most people, the food keeps them coming back:

"We love hanging out the food," said David. "Drinking Peroni, cannolis, rum cake"

The festival continues through Sunday afternoon.
