South Jersey Doctor's License Lifted Over Narcotics Prescriptions

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) -- New Jersey officials have temporarily suspended the medical license of a Merchantville doctor over allegations that he improperly prescribed narcotic painkillers.
The New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners found that Dr. Adam Gilliss "knew that he was perceived to be an 'easy mark' for drug-seeking patients," but says he took no measures to alter his practices until he became aware the medical board was investigating him.
They looked into the manner in which Gilliss prescribed narcotic painkillers, including oxycodone, for seven patients. Investigators say he prescribed the drugs without sufficiently evaluating whether they were medically necessary or justified.
State officials allege that Gilliss was grossly negligent, putting his patients at risk of addiction or worse, turning a "blind eye to those who may be illegally diverting drugs."
