Sorry, Dad: Father's Day Ranked Smallest Of American Gift-giving Holidays

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Sad news for Dad: The National Retail Federation says Father's Day is the smallest American gift-giving holiday.

According to the organization, most people choose to mark the occasion with a simple greeting card – 64.1% pick paper over gifts.

But 41.5% do show their gratitude by buying dear old Dad apparel such as neckties or clothing. For those who purchase gifts, the average amount spent is $113.80, slightly down from last year's average of almost $120.

Still, Dad shouldn't despair: 42.6% will celebrate Father's Day with a special outing, such as a meal out in a restaurant or a sporting event. And after all, isn't the best gift you can get as a father love?
