On Facebook, Sunday's final match between Germany and Argentina generated 280 million interactions by 88 million people, easily surpassing former champ Super Bowl 47, with its 245 million interactions.

The World Cup was Facebook's most popular event in history, generating more than 3 billion interactions from 350 million users around the world.

Over on Twitter, 32.1 million tweets were sent during the World Cup final and users set a new tweets-per-minute record sending 618,725 tweets every 60 seconds.

The Brazil/Germany game was the most popular sporting event on the network, generating 35.6 million tweets during the match.

The official FIFA app became the biggest sports-event app ever, with 28 million downloads and its Instagram account jumped from 42,000 followers to nearly 1 million in 31 days.
