Snow Causes Bird Exhibit Roof Collapse At Local Zoo

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) - The heavy snow caused extensive damage to a building at the Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown.

When workers arrived at the zoo Sunday morning, they saw that the snow caused the wire mesh roof to collapse on the Birds of Paradise exhibit.

"Thankfully the exhibit is closed during winter time so the birds were off exhibit in their nice warm holding area," says marketing director Shaun Rogers.

He says rebuilding the exhibit will take some time:

"I think what will happen now is we'll take a look at this structure and how it was built originally, and maybe think of different ways to do it so we can avoid this sort of problem in the future."

The zoo remains closed, but is expected to reopen this week.
