Smoke, Flames Bring Fire Crews To South Philly Sunoco Refinery

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Crews were at the Sunoco Refinery in South Philadelphia Saturday monitoring a situation involving heavy smoke and large flares.

This began around 3:30 p.m. at the refinery located on the 3100 block of West Passayunk Avenue.

Philadelphia Energy Solution officials say the refining complex experienced operational issues that resulted in the flaring and smoke.

The company says neither posed a health risk for the community and they add things looked much worse than they were because of the cold weather.

No injuries were reported.

Officials say teams are working to restore to normal operations.

The cause of this event is under investigation while the refinery is already in the process of restarting.
