Smith Memorial Playground Recognized As Nationally Certified Nature Explore Classroom

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Smith Memorial Playground is now one of over 350 certified nature explore classrooms across the country.

Playground executive director Meg Wise says they repurposed a previously underutilized section of their grounds specifically for nature-based play.

"It's based on sort of a 'loose parts' philosophy so there are blocks made out of pieces of tree branches and there's a sand pit for digging, and there's a messy materials area, there's a water table."

Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation explains the importance of nature-based play:

"Research is coming out year after year showing that connecting with nature helps children's development, helps calm, helps foster a sense of curiousity and exploration."

Smith Playground is now open for the season every day except Mondays.
