Small Pets Welcome On Some Amtrak Trains Starting October 12th

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Good news for pet owners who hate leaving their furry friends at home.

Amtrak says it is welcoming small dogs and other pets to travel with riders from Boston to Lynchburg, Newport News and Norfolk, VA on the Northeast Regional service and between Boston and Brunswick, ME on the Downeaster route.

Amtrak says the service comes in response to a successful pets on trains pilot program in Illinois.

The pilot program will be expanded along the Northeast Corridor and New England.

Riders can bring their pets, one dog or one cat, in a carrier on trips up to seven hours in length.

All animals must weigh 20 pounds or less and will be placed under the owner's seat.

Amtrak says the program will run from October 12 – February 15 and will be continuously reviewed for possible improvements or continuation.

To travel with your pet will cost you $25. To book a ticket call 1-800-USA-RAIL or visit an Amtrak ticket counter.
