2 dead, 2 injured, after shooting in North Philadelphia's Nicetown neighborhood, police say

1 killed, 3 injured in shooting in Nicetown section of Philadelphia, police say

Two men died, and a mother and her child were injured in a shooting in North Philadelphia Saturday night, police said.

Officers responded to a shooting in the 1900 block of West Hunting Park Avenue in Nicetown just before 8:30 p.m. for a report of a shooting.

A family barbecue was happening on the block when a fight broke out, Deputy Commissioner of Investigations Frank Vanore said in a press conference on Monday.

During the fight, a man pulled out a gun and fired, striking the 26-year-old mother and a 26-year-old man, police said.

The group of people scattered, but some people came to help the two shooting victims, Vanore said.

After hearing the gunshots, a 20-year-old man came out of the house and shortly thereafter, fired a gun down the street in the direction of other people, according to Vanore.

Police believe this is when a 29-year-old man was struck, and the 26-year-old mother's 7-year-old daughter suffered a graze wound to the side of her head. The child is listed as stable at Saint Christopher's Hospital for Children.

The 26-year-old mother is also listed as stable after being taken to the hospital for a gunshot wound to her arm, police said.

The two men who were shot, a 29-year-old and a 26-year-old, were taken to Temple University Hospital and later died Saturday night.

The Homicide Unit is conducting the investigation.

Through their investigation, the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office was able to charge the 20-year-old man.

"I think everybody involved in this knew each other, so this is not going to be, as you know, something we're not going to be able to get to the bottom of," Vanore said. "We're working very hard to find the first group of individuals that were fighting and bring them in, and the district attorney will review the evidence we have on them."
