Shedding Light On Human Trafficking

By Justin Udo

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) --- Cooper Medical School in Camden hosted an event Monday night aimed at shedding light on human trafficking.

During the screening of "Sex + Money: A National Search for Human Worth," the audience of more than 150 people got an up-close look at child sex trafficking.

"We're really hoping to raise awareness that we have patients who are affected by this activity and provide awareness and the beginning of recognition -- so that we can do a better job offering help," says Cooper University Hospital's Dr. Kathy McCans.

McCans says events like this are important for the community, because many people don't know that within 48 hours of leaving home, one in three runaway teens are approached by someone involved in the commercial sex industry.

After the screening, the audience heard from a survivor of child sex trafficking.

"What I really want people to get from this is that we are all human, and to not put us into a box and see us as people that they can't help," the survivor said.
