1 Dead After SEPTA Regional Rail Train Strikes Car In Montgomery County
LOWER MORELAND TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) -- One person was killed after a SEPTA regional rail train struck a car in Montgomery County on Thursday morning.
Two women tried to jump to safety as their SUV was on a crash course with a SEPTA train in Lower Moreland Township. Only one of them made it.
It happened during the snowstorm this morning in Lower Moreland.
Lower Moreland Township Police Chief Peter Hasson says the GMC Terrain was on Red Lion Road and the driver was unable to stop at the downhill crossing of the West Trenton regional rail line.
"The vehicle broke through the gate and struck the passing train that was headed southbound," said Hasson.
The driver jumped out of the moving vehicle before the collision. Hasson says it appears the other woman also tried to free herself.
"When we found her she was outside the vehicle. She'd been ejected, or ejected, and her injuries were fatal," said Hasson.
No one on the train was hurt.
The chief says it took several minutes before the SEPTA engineer became aware something had happened.
