Sen. Casey Discusses Support For Legislation Making It Harder For Domestic Abusers To Buy Guns
NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey was in Norristown, Wednesday morning, meeting with representatives from a domestic violence agency, discussing his support for legislation designed to make it harder for domestic abusers or stalkers to buy guns.
Senator Casey says the bill would address domestic abuse and gun violence.
"And the intersection between the two is particularly worrisome for so many people across the country."
Casey points to two studies, one finds 4.5 million women have been threatened with a gun by what's called an intimate partner. Another finds a domestic abuse victim is five times more likely to be murdered if a handgun is available.
Casey says among other things, the legislation he's backing would prevent anyone convicted of misdemeanor stalking from being allowed to buy a gun.
But he adds this is an uphill battle in Congress, as it difficult to even get a vote on what he calls common-sense gun legislation, such as banning anyone on the no-fly list from purchasing such weapons.
