Seek Treatment For Postpartum Depression

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It is not well publicized but as many as four out of five women have mood changes in the first ten days after giving birth. This is often called the baby blues. But sometimes the symptoms are more severe and last more than ten days – and, in these cases, we worry about a more serious problem called postpartum depression.

Symptoms may include sadness, anxiety and crying. Some women may worry too much about their baby or be afraid of making mistakes.

It is normal to worry a bit after having a baby however too much worry is not a good thing. But, if you feel it is impacting your care for the baby or if you feel frightened, you may harm your baby you should seek help from your doctor.

What is important to recognize is that, with proper treatment and the passage of time, postpartum depression can be effectively treated. The danger occurs if you don't get help or feel embarrassed to seek care. We know a great deal more about postpartum depression than we used to and it can be treated.
