Schools Chief Hite Turns Down His $60,000 Performance Bonus

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The School Reform Commission is giving Philadelphia schools superintendent William Hite a solid performance evaluation.
But Hite is declining the bonus that goes with his good report card.
It ws a good, but not perfect, report card for Superintendent Hite. The SRC is giving him grades of "proficient" in areas including student achievement and community relations -- and one grade of "distinguished," in financial management.
"Dr. Hite did great," said SRC chair Marjorie Neff. "He's an exceptional leader. We're very excited about the work that he's been doing and the work that he looks forward to doing."
The evaluation earns Hite a $60,000 bonus on top of his $300,000 base salary. But Neff says in a year in which schools had to do more with less, Hite is turning down the bonus.
The evaluation is for the 2013-14 school year. Neff says it was delayed by last year's financial crisis, and that Hite's report card for the just-ended school year should be out in the fall.
