Sanchez Looks For Fresh Start With The Eagles

By Ed Benkin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Mark Sanchez was labeled the "Sanchise" in New York. Now, he is simply looking to be a serviceable back-up in Philadelphia.

The Eagles signed the former Jets quarterback to a one-year deal. Sanchez said he had several options after his release from the Jets, but believes Philadelphia was the best place for him to continue his career.

"We had a handful of offers," said Sanchez. "This just felt like the right fit. I think it's the best fit offensively and with the kind of leaders they have on this team. We talked about the offensive firepower, and this is one of the most explosive teams around the league."

Sanchez understands that Nick Foles is the Eagles starting quarterback. Sanchez will likely battle fellow-USC alum Matt Barkley for the number two spot on the quarterback depth chart.

"I'm always going to want to start," Sanchez said. "But I think Matt Barkley wants to start. It doesn't matter where you are. All of the guys want to play, and there's nothing wrong with that. There's nothing wrong with having that drive."

Sanchez was a first-round draft choice of the Jets in 2009. He helped lead the team to a pair of AFC Championship games, but turnovers and losses began to mount in New York. Sanchez missed all of the 2013 season with a shoulder injury, but says he is completely healthy heading into 2014.

"I feel good," said Sanchez. "I'll be ready to go. The physical was great. The doctor was pleasantly surprised and things are going smooth."

It is rare a starting NFL quarterback makes it through an entire season without an injury, so Sanchez knows he may get his chance at some point during the season. For now, Sanchez is simply happy to be a part of the Eagles.

"I'm confident no matter who I'm competing against," Sanchez said. "Coming in here, I'm not trying to stir up a controversy. I'm here to help this team win."
