Pre-race ritual: I always make sure that I eat breakfast before my morning runs and a small snack before my afternoon and evening runs and they always contain whole grains. There's nothing like a lack of energy during a run. If I'm running solo, music is a must, it always gets me going.

Tips for new runners: Always eat something, even the smallest snack can make the biggest difference. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Hydration isn't simply a running thing; you must do it constantly regardless of the activity.

Why he runs: I started doing 5ks during my first deployment in Kuwait and became hooked on racing. While in the Reserves, I missed out on the Broad Street Run too many times as it fell on drill weekend, but now that I'm retired I can run it every year. Racing is addictive and no matter what anyone says, you can never have too many medals.
