Ruben Amaro Jr. Named Red Sox First-Base Coach

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Former Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. was named the next first-base coach of the Boston Red Sox, on Monday.

The news was first reported by Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

"I am truly honored to join the Red Sox, a first-class organization with a tremendous history," Amaro said via the team's website. "I was honored that Dave and John would consider me for this opportunity and add me to this dynamic coaching staff. I am poised, focused, and ready to bring anything I can in terms of experience and knowledge to this position, and I look forward to being a part of the Boston Red Sox."

Amaro, 50, became the Phillies' GM after the team won the World Series in 2008 and was fired in September, as the team suffered a quick downfall under his management.

Amaro played in the MLB for eight years as an outfield with three different teams, including the Phillies (1992-93, 1996-98).

The Phillies hired Los Angeles Angels assistant GM Matt Klentak, 35, to replace Amaro as team vice president and general manager.
