Roosevelt Boulevard reopens in Philadelphia after fatal crash shuts down part of the road
Traffic is starting to move again on Roosevelt Boulevard after a fatal crash shut down the road in both directions Friday morning. As of around 9:30 a.m., there was still a large backup.
The crash killed one person and left several others injured just around 3:30 a.m. under the Broad Street overpass, Philadelphia police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
A police spokesperson said the incident started in the northbound lanes when a 55-year-old man and a 31-year-old man were in a crash that disabled their vehicles.
After that crash, other cars struck the disabled vehicles. Both men got out of their cars and hopped over the concrete median in the center of the highway to get into the southbound lanes and try to avoid getting hurt.
Once they hopped the median, the men were struck by a silver Toyota driven by a 21-year-old man.
Police arrived on the scene and found the 55-year-old victim, who was pronounced dead on the scene at 3:38 a.m., according to police.
The driver of the Toyota was taken to a nearby hospital in "extremely critical condition."
The 55-year-old's identity is not being made public at this time as police work to notify his family.
