Robbery Suspect Shot, Killed During Gunfight With Police In Vineland

VINELAND, N.J. (CBS/AP) — Prosecutors say police shot and killed a robbery suspect who exchanged gunfire with them in Cumberland County, New Jersey.

But another suspect fled the scene and remains at large.

The shooting occurred shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday near East Avenue and Almond Street in Vineland.

Cumberland County prosecutors say city police responding to reports of shots fired found a robbery victim. But the two assailants had fled before officers arrived.

The suspects were found a short time later, and a foot pursuit ensued. Prosecutors say at least one suspect exchanged gunfire with an officer.

The wounded suspect, 31-year-old Richard Bard Jr. of Bridgeton, was pronounced dead at a hospital. The officer who shot him was placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in police-involved shootings.

The officer's name was not released.

The robbery victim was hospitalized in stable condition.
