Police: Half-Naked Man Assaults Female Passenger, Steals Cab In Rittenhouse Square

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia police say a half-naked man assaulted a taxi passenger and stole the taxi driver's cab Monday afternoon in Rittenhouse Square.

The incident took place off the 1800 block of Walnut Street just after 3 p.m.

CBS 3's David Spunt reports the taxi driver was inside his cab with a female passenger when a shirtless man assaulted the woman. The driver and the female passenger were not hurt.

The man then got in the driver's seat of the cab and drove the car through Rittenhouse Square with hundreds of people around.

A good Samaritan then pulled the guy out of the car after he crashed.

Video of the incident captures the suspect driving the cab through Rittenhouse Square Park.

"A crazy guy came from the passenger side and he opened the passenger side door and he grabbed her by the collar and he dragged her on the street," said taxi driver Michael Emanuel.

Police say they believe the suspect was under the influence of an unknown substance and are doing a DUI test on him.

The suspect is in police custody.
