Review: Wayback Burgers

By Glen Macnow

Score: 6.0
Price: We tried the "Philly Burger" with American cheese, grilled onions and mushrooms for $5.99.
Location: Multiple. We went to the one on Baltimore Pike in Springfield.

A big-time food critic friend of ours help draw up the list for this contest. He recommended several high-end steakhouses, a few trendy Center City gastro pubs – and Wayback. "Sometimes," our snooty friend sniffed, "you just want a good, solid everyday burger."

And that's what Wayback provides. There's nothing fancy, no frills, no truffle oil or grass-fed smoked duck pate. What you get is a no-nonsense , enjoyable hamburger. I'll put it in sports terms: If Jason Kelce was a hamburger , this is what he'd be.

We went for the "Philly Burger," not really sure why mushrooms and onions make something more "Philly." I dunno, maybe they stopped in Kennett Square on the way? Anyway, it's a solid slab of beef, cooked just right and stuffed into an bun arranged with the outside edges in. I'm not sure why they do that technique, but it did seem to make it tastier. Special praise for milkshakes, which come in a dozen flavors. They even offered to add malt to the milkshake, which always gains points in my book.
