Review: The Phil's Tavern

By Glen Macnow

Score: 6.85
Price: Cheeseburger - $9.95.
Location: 931 Butler Pike, Blue Bell.

We've been to Phil's many times over the years, enjoying the ribs, cheesesteaks and other delights from that huge menu that looks like an Andy Reid play chart. And their burger placed high in the contest last time we did it nine years ago. What I said the remains true today:

They are not stingy at Phil's. I ordered it, as always, with cheese and bacon. It came with melted cheese on both sides of the bun and enough slices of bacon that even a glutton like Big Daddy Graham could put down that much in one sitting.

It's fresh-from-the-butcher sirloin, but our request for medium-rare must have got lost. Wayyy overcooked. The bun seemed a few days old and rather tasteless. Overall, this remains a fine product – but I think the renaissance in the burger industry has left Phil's a few notches below the top contenders this year.
