Police: Report Of Person With Shotgun Prompts Temporary School Lockdown In Somerton

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- An elementary school in Northeast Philadelphia was temporarily placed on lockdown after a report of person with a gun outside the school.

The situation happened at about 8:20 a.m. Wednesday at Loesche Elementary School on Bustleton Avenue and Tomlinson Road in the city's Somerton section.

According to Philadelphia Police, a construction worker in the area told police he observed a male walking towards the school with a shotgun.

As a result of that report, the school was placed on lockdown.

Officers conducted a thorough check of both inside and outside of the school, but found no threat.

The lockdown at the school was lifted at about 9:40 a.m. The rest of the school day will operate as normal with indoor recess.

The incident remains under investigation.
