Report: Sugar May Cause Heart Disease

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Researchers say there are new revelations about the role of sugar in coronary heart disease.

A new report suggests the sugar industry funded research to cast doubt on sugar's health hazards -- and instead pointed to fat and cholesterol as main risk factors for heart disease.

Now, experts around the world are looking at sugar as the main cause of heart disease.

The report also highlights the importance of having medical research free of conflicts of interest.

Researchers say, "Policymaking committees should consider giving less weight to food industry–funded studies and include mechanistic and animal studies as well as studies appraising the effect of added sugars on multiple CHD biomarkers and disease development."
