Report: Chase Utley Clears Waivers, Can Be Dealt Before Aug. 31 Deadline

By Ray Boyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- According to a report from Ken Rosenthal, Phillies second baseman Chase Utley has cleared waivers and is eligible to be traded prior to the August 31 waiver trade deadline.

Utley possesses the right to veto any trade that the Phillies may agree to.

The Phillies have made it clear all year that they are in a rebuild mode and looking to free up opportunities for younger players to play. Utley's recent DL stint allowed for more opportunities for Cesar Hernandez at second base.

There is no guarantee that Utley will receive substantial playing time with the Phillies throughout the remainder of the season.

The Phillies have a $15 million club option on Utley's deal for next season. As a fan favorite, it is hard to picture Utley on another team, but a contender could find a role for the veteran infielder down the stretch.

Utley is hitting just .190 with four home runs and 28 RBIs in 69 games. Since returning from the DL, Utley is hitting .385 with three RBIs and three doubles in thirteen at-bats.

Phillies General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. referenced Utley's no-trade clause on SportsRadio 94WIP on Tuesday and added that "he's playing very well for us and helping us win baseball games and it's very possible he's gonna end up finishing off the season with us."
