Rehoboth Beach Partially Bans Smoking Near Beach

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. (AP) — Rehoboth Beach is banning smoking on the boardwalk and bandstand area of the Delaware resort town this year and will limit smoking to designated areas of the beach.

Rehoboth Beach commissioners and the mayor voted Monday to limit smoking. The ban also includes the city's parks.

Commissioner Stan Mills says the smoking ban will reduce litter, pollution and health risks. The ban will not include e-cigarettes because there is no litter or smoke.

Under the new regulations taking effect May 15, the beach will have no more than 20 designated smoking areas during the summer season. In the off-season, there will be four smoking areas.

The ban relies primarily on voluntary compliance. But police can impose a $25 fine for those who don't comply.
