Redick Makes Drexel Women's Hoops History

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Triple-doubles in basketball don't happen very often. In fact, in the history of Drexel women's basketball, it had never been accomplished - that is until Thursday night.

Senior guard/forward Abby Redick became the first in program history to turn the trick in a win over William and Mary. She finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and a career high 12 assists as the Dragons rolled, 89-49.

"It was definitely a lot of fun playing last night and having my teammates keep scoring the ball," Redick tells KYW Newsradio. "I think we shot in the high 60's (68%) last night (in the second half) , so it was a good win for us."

Redick is very quick to deflect the credit for her special night to her teammates.

"I couldn't have done any type of triple-double without them," Redick says. "It's definitely a very humbling accomplishment, to have the first one in the program's history."

The Dragons blew this game open in the second half as they outscored William and Mary, 54-17, over the final twenty minutes. It was well into that half that Redick really got wind of what was happening.

"Amy (Mallon), my assistant coach, looked down at me and said, 'Abby, can you get one more rebound?'" Redick says. "And I was like, 'What are you talking about?' (She replied) 'Can you get one more rebound?' I was like, 'Absolutely, yep.' And I get one more rebound. So it kind of clicked that I was able to get one (triple-double) then. It was a lot of fun last night, that's for sure."

Redick is the younger sister of former Duke legend J.J. Redick, who currently is in his ninth season in the NBA with the Clippers. Some quick research shows that of all the accomplishments older brother has put together in college and the pros - a triple-double is not one of them.

"It's cool to be one up on him in something!" Redick jokes. "He's a great player. He is having a great season coming off his injury with the Clippers. My family is very tight knit. My mom sent out a family text (Thursday) night and everyone was like, 'What? No way!' J.J. was like, 'That's awesome!' We encourage each other as Redicks and want each other to succeed. Maybe I've got him on the triple-double, but he'll probably drop 30, he had a career high the other night (33 points vs. Dallas), so he'll probably just drop 30 tomorrow."

Redick and the rest of the Drexel squad will return to the court Sunday when they visit rival Delaware.
