Red Light Cameras In Philly Netted Millions Of Dollars In Fines Last Year

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia's 28 red light cameras netted nearly $5 and a half million in fines last year from drivers.
So, how and where will all that money be used?
If you're among those who had to write a $100 check after getting ticket in the mail when you pushed on the gas to get through one of those monitored traffic lights at high-traffic intersections, you made a contribution to that big pot of money.
Under state law, the fines are used for traffic and signal improvements across the state.
PennDOT says 23 safety projects submitted by 18 communities will receive a share of the money.
Philadelphia will get the biggest chunk, $2.8 million.
A million dollars of that will go to making safety improvements at up to 50 known, frequent crash locations throughout the city.
And, $525,000 will go toward pedestrian safety and street lighting within commercial and residential corridors in the city.
PennDOT officials say signal and safety improvement projects in Bucks, Chester and Montgomery counties also will be funded by the fines.
