Ramsey Offers Condolences To NYPD Over Slain Officer

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As New York City's Police Department mourns the fourth officer killed in the line of duty in 11 months, Philadelphia's outgoing Commissioner offered his condolences over a situation he's all too familiar with.
Commissioner Charles Ramsey says his counterpart in New York, Bill Bratton, is dealing with a similar situation he dealt with not long into his tenure in Philadelphia involving officers being killed.
"We've gone through something similar here where we had five in nine months back in 2008," Ramsey says, "beginning with Steve Lizcbinski on May 3, 2008 and then we lost Isabel Nazario, Pat McDonald, Tim Simpson and John Pawlowski all within a short period of time. So I know how the entire department feels and I know how Commissioner Bratton has to feel."
Ramsey says a Philly Police Department contingent will be ready to go to New York to show support. And in the wake of recent events, the commissioner says this is yet another deadly incident to learn from.
"It is a time to come together," Ramsey says, "but it's also a time for us all to remember just how dangerous those streets are."
He says thoughtful, balanced discussion needs to happen on issues like stop and frisk, which he continues to support.
