PSPCA Hosts Community Day At New Fishtown Center

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -The Pennsylvania SPCA hosted a community day Saturday at its new center located in a vibrant Fishtown neighborhood.

Eight-year-old Kaiya Berardine of Warrington and her seven-year-old brother Anthony were being shown by a PSPCA representative how to hear the heartbeat of a canine using a stethoscope on a dog mannequin.

Kaiya tells KYW Newsradio she wants to be an animal doctor when she grows up:

" I want to be a veterinarian for sick animals and help them."

Guests got to meet the dogs and cats up for adoption and there was face painting, games and pizza.

"And part of it is about the services that we provide in terms of the vet care," says Jerry Buckley , CEO of the Pennsylvania SPCA. "Like today, it's a wonderful example of humane education of exposing kids especially to good things to think about and how to care for animals and so it's much more than an adoption center it's really a community center for people and animals."
