Prosecutors: NJ Man Accused Of Murdering Son Did So Because Teen Girlfriend Doesn't Like Children

HADDON TOWNSHIP, N.J, (CBS) --  Three months after the mysterious death of a three-year old boy in Haddon Township, and a day after his father was indicted on murder charges, prosecutors laid out for the first time a cause of death and a motive. At his arraignment, 22-year-old David Creato Jr. was ordered held on $750,000 bail.

Assistant Prosecutor Christine Shah told the court the three-year-old victim, Brendan Creato was found three-quarters of a mile from his father's home in his pajamas with clean socks. She says it was a dirty, muddy trail, and his socks were "perfectly clean." She says Brendan "did not go there under his own power."

Shah says three autopsies were performed, and the final determination was that the toddler was the victim of "homicidal violence, not otherwise specified." Shah says the possibilities include "drowning, asphyxia, or strangulation."

Prosecutors say the defendant's 17-year-old juvenile girlfriend did not like children and was threatening to break off their intense relationship.

Defense lawyer Richard Fuschino maintains it's a weak case with only circumstantial evidence.

Superior Court Judge Edward McBride ordered Creato held on $750,000 bail.
