Pro-Gun Group Taking Lower Merion Township To Court

By Paul Kurtz

LOWER MERION Twp. (CBS) - Lower Merion Township officials are embroiled in a legal battle with a pro-gun rights group.

Firearm Owners Against Crime is suing Lower Merion over an ordinance that prohibits people from carrying or firing guns in a park without a special permit.

Group president Kim Stolfer contends the township is in violation of state law:

"Since 1974 Pennsylvania has had a law telling local governments they cannot in any manner regulate firearms. "

The lawsuit asks a judge to repeal the ordinance.

"What we don't like is for a community to say that we'll let all citizens come in except ones that believe in the right to bare arms in self defense and that's what Lower Merion has said," Stolfer says.

Lower Merion officials have declined to comment on the suit.
