Officials: Police Fatally Shoot Gunman Following Standoff At Restaurant Near Princeton Campus

PRINCETON, N.J. (CBS/AP) -- A gunman is dead following a police standoff at a restaurant near the Princeton University campus, authorities say.

Officials say the gunman died in a police-involved shooting following the standoff inside the Panera Bread restaurant on Nassau Street.

The New Jersey Attorney General's Office says an armed gunman entered the restaurant shortly after 10 a.m. Customers and employees were able to flee the building.

The standoff lasted for several hours as negotiators attempted unsuccessfully to get the suspect to surrender.

Officials say the standoff ended around 3 p.m. when the suspect was shot and killed by police.

Panera Bead employees who were at another nearby eatery declined to comment on the unfolding standoff.

It wasn't immediately known if the gunman had any connection to the university. Classes are not in session at Princeton, which is on spring break.

The gunman's identity has not been revealed.

No other injuries were reported.
