Positively Philadelphia: Food Truck Festival, May 9th

By Lauren Lipton

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (CBS) -- The Taste of Three Cities food truck festival and competition is coming to South Philadelphia this coming Saturday, May 9th.

From 12 noon until 9pm, you're invited to try out food from 60 different food trucks based in three cities: Philadelphia; Washington, DC; and Baltimore, Md.

A Philadelphia truck, The Cow and the Curd, was among the winners at the festival's first stop, in Washington.

The truck's manager, Nathan Carter, was recently getting those cheese curds ready for a hungry lunchtime crowd.

"It's always a great win, especially when you're in a new area," he told me.  "You know, a lot of people, especially on the east coast, aren't familiar with what a cheese curd is.  It's kind of like a religion out in the midwest, but on the east coast it's not quite up there with cheesesteaks and pretzels."

So, what is a cheese curd?

"Cheddar cheese from Wisconsin.  Cheese curd is the first part of the cheesemaking process -- it's separated from the whey.  We batter these cheese curds in a beer batter, and then we fry them to order," Carter explains.
