Poll: Percentage Of Americans Who Believe Having A Gun At Home Makes It Safer Has Doubled

WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBS) – More Americans than ever believe having a gun in the house makes it safer.

A new Gallup poll reveals the percentage of Americans who feel that way has more than doubled since 2000, to 63%.

Apparently, between 2000 and 2006 less than half of Americans said having a gun made them feel safer, but since 2006, the percentage in favor of having a firearm in the house has been slowly increasing.

Two-thirds of whites and Southerners are in favor of having a gun to increase security, but a majority of minorities say they feel the same.

According to Gallup, the percentage of Republicans who say having a gun makes them feel safer has nearly doubled since 2000, from 44% to 81%. Democrats, on the other hand, do not see things the same way. Only 41% feel a gun makes a home safer, and about half believe it actually makes a home more dangerous.

Gallup says the survey includes responses from about 1,000 randomly selected American adults and was conducted in October 2014.
