Police: Suspect Pretends To Be IRS Agent In Delaware Phone Scam

NEW CASTLE, Del. (CBS) – New Castle County police are warning residents about a recent phone scam in which the caller pretends to be a representative from the Department of Treasury or the IRS.

This past weekend police say they received more than 50 reports from residents stating they received calls in which the suspect claimed to be a law enforcement agent and told the victims they owed back taxes and would be arrested if they did not pay immediately.

Victims say the caller had a strong accent.

New Castle County Police are asking citizens to report suspicious phone calls from anyone claiming to be a law enforcement officer or government agent.

Authorities assure residents that law enforcement officials will never solicit money in lieu of an arrest.

Any victims who have provided financial information to a suspect over the phone should contact the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Unit at 1-800-220-5424 or by email at consumer.protection@state.de.us.
