Police Pull Woman And Infant From River After Mother Tosses Child In

ALLENTOWN, PA (CBS) -- According to the Allentown Police Department, a woman stopped along the Hamilton Street Bridge on Sunday and tossed a one-year old baby into the Lehigh River.

The young mother was pushing a stroller along the pedestrian path over the bridge when witnesses say she stopped mid-span.

"They saw her lift the baby out of the stroller and just, right over." said Allentown police captain William Reinik.

Police say the baby fell 52 feet into the water below. Authorities add that the 19-year-old mother threw herself off the bridge and into the river after tossing in the child.

Authorities responded to the scene and found the woman who had exited the river and collapsed on the bank.

"It took us about four minutes of trying to locate where this baby might be." said Reinik. "He was eventually found about 700 yards down river."

Police performed CPR on the child after removing it from the river and they were able to revive him.

Both the woman and the child were transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital and were listed in serious condition.

No charges have been reported and police continue to investigate the situation.
