Police: Officer Wounded In Shooting In South Jersey

CAMDEN, NJ (CBS) – Camden County Police are investigating after they say an officer was struck in the arm by a bullet fragment Wednesday night.

Police say the officer was working a special detail targeting violent crime when he began investigating a suspicious vehicle.

Authorities say the car came to a sudden stop parking along Kenwood Avenue. The occupants then exited the vehicle and began to distance themselves from it.

Police say as the officer drove near the occupants, one of the suspects opened fire with multiple rounds hitting the officer's vehicle.

The officer did not return fire, but police say he attempted to pursue the suspects once the firing stopped.

The officer was taken to Cooper Medical Center with a bullet fragment lodged in his arm.

"This officer was bravely doing his duty of protecting the public from suspected violent criminals when he himself quickly became a victim. His grace under fire and presence of mind to immediately coordinate a perimeter in an attempt to capture the suspects was exemplary," said Chief Scott Thomson.

"We will not rest until we apprehend the individual and his co-conspirators who attempted to kill a police officer.
